I have been involved in several projects related to usability, systems analysis and web design. I have also given a number of presentations and lectures on applied cognitive topics such as speech perception, language development and emergent properties of complex systems.

The preponderance of Single-Sensor Single Indicator displays in medical environments severely restricts the complexity of information that can be successfully conveyed to the end user. Multimodal displays that capitalize on the unique properties of audition as well as vision can substantially improve the utility of displays and alarms.

Cognition "in the wild" is a joint activity between a person and their environment. By shouldering a bigger portion of the cognitive demands, technological agents can help reduce workload and improve performance of their human collaborators.

Management Oversight Risk Tree is an analysis method designed for complex goal-oriented systems. It is used primarily for accident investigation, but is also helpful for inspections, audits and appraisals. The MORT chart makes causal factors of accidents visible, and its complexity results in very thorough assessments that include management, structural and energy factors.

Conversation is an emergent phenomenon that arises out of the interaction between multiple individuals. Emergent phenomena cannot be studied in isolation, as they do not exist outside of the interactive context in which they arise.

This has broad implications for the study of speech communication, especially as it applies to the new wave of speech interface technologies.
